Brit backpacker Catherine Shaw ‘stripped naked on volcano‘ before death

after she left Hotel Mayachik, near Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, on March 5.

Police confirmed her body had been discovered yesterday 60ft from the top of the Indian Nose hiking trail on Monday.

The Lucie Blackman Trust – which has been supporting Catherine’s family – confirmed “foul play was probably not involved”.

It is believed she may have fallen or passed out while hiking after stripping naked.

And the charity added it is believed she may have been travelling to the top of the volcano to view the sunrise.

“Due to her lack of intake of food and fluid may have passed out or fallen, causing the wounds to her body”

Matthew Searle, chief executive of the Lucie Blackman Trust, urged for an end of speculation following her death, saying it was a “tragic accident”.

Horrific photos purporting to show her bruised body had emerged online along with a “leaked” police report claiming there had been “blows”.

Speculation ran rife online that she had been murdered, along with Guatemalan authorities saying there would be a “criminal probe”.

Mr Searle dismissed rumours as “incredibly unhelpful, distressing and unnecessary”.

In a statement, Catherine’s parents Ann and Tarquin thanked locals and search teams for their efforts to trace their daughter.

“Thank you seems insufficient but it is very heartfelt, so thank you,” they said.

“Catherine just loved mountains and sunrises. She died doing what she loved. We want to say how hugely indebted we are to The Lucie Blackman Trust, who have done everything possible.

“Their support has been fantastic throughout this tragic episode since the very first phone call.”

Mr Searle added: “We know that Catherine had been fasting for the days leading to her disappearance and that she had been disposing of possessions, including clothing.

“She was very much a nature lover and adored sunrises, so it seems quite conceivable that she went up the mountain to greet the sunrise, shedding clothing as she went, and due to her lack of intake of food and fluid may have passed out or fallen, causing the wounds to her body.

“Whilst of course at this stage we do not know the full facts, and cannot rule anything out until we do, it is wrong to assume and of course confirm that she was raped and murdered by a mystery assailant when such facts are not evident.

“Facebook posts analysing photographs of poor Catherine’s body are totally unacceptable.”

CCTV: Catherine Shaw was last seen by pals in the early hours of the morning at Hotel Mayachik (Pic: REUTERS)

Catherine had been travelling in the Central American country for two weeks having previously visited Mexico, where she attended a nudist festival, and California.

She had been travelling since September last year and was last seen leaving the Eco Hotel in Mayachik, between San Pedro and San Juan, on Tuesday.

Catherine was barefoot, left her mobile phone and passport in her room, and she also had a puppy with her – which was later found “shivering” on the mountain.

The Lucie Blackman Trust said the search had been difficult due to communication issues and lack of power in the area.
