Economist confused supporters and amused critics this week with his declaration: “Only one brand of anti-Semitism scares me — and it’s not on the left.”

The New York Times columnist’s remarks came as Democrats struggle to respond to Rep. Ilhan Omar’s behavior. The Minnesota lawmaker caused headaches for her colleagues with an “all about the Benjamins, baby” remark about Jewish lobbyists and another about “political influence in this country that says it is OK to push for allegiance to a foreign country.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that Ms. Omar, a Muslim, does not understand “the full weight” of her rhetoric.

“There are three things in life that are certain: death, taxes (unless you’re Donald Trump), and persistence of anti-Semitism. But only one brand of antisemitism scares me — and it’s not on the left,” Wednesday as pundits debated the issue.

received a flood of rebukes for his position.

“Shame on you, ,” tweeted Carol Roth. “Of all of the horrible things I have read on this site, and there are many, this may be the most upsetting. For a fellow Jew to condone any type of anti-Semitism is not anything I’d ever thought I’d live to see.”

“What an awful, remarkably short-sighted statement,” added Zeev Suraski. “Have you been following what’s going on in the UK at all, where roughly half of the Jews consider emigrating due to left-wing antisemitism? Instead of waiting for the same to play out in the US, learn from others’ experience.”

“Dismissing-leftist-anti-Semitism Krugman is peak ,” replied a third person.

House Democrats plan to add issues like Islamophobia and white supremacy to an anti-Semitism resolution, which will not chide Ms. Omar by name.

“If we’re cleaning up everybody’s language, we can start in the White House,” Mrs. Pelosi .
