Scammer uses police sergeant‘s identity to solicit money

HINGHAM, Mass. (AP) – Police in Massachusetts are warning a scammer is using the identity of a Hingham police sergeant to solicit money on dating sites and social media.

Sgt. Steven Dearth, public information officer for the Hingham Police Department, said Tuesday that scammers have been using his photos and personal information on Instagram and the dating site PlentyofFish. The Patriot Ledger reports the profiles use photos taken from Dearth’s personal social media accounts.

Dearth says the scammers try to convince people to wire money to them or give them credit card information. Each account found by the police department has been reported as fake and closed, but new ones have appeared.

Police are reminding people to never share credit card or financial information online.
